Keauhou Store

The Keauhou Store is a significant place that really obtains the flavor of old Kona. It was started by a Japanese immigrant 90 years ago when he moved to the Big Island to work as a coffee farmer. At first, the store started by selling bicycles, appliances and also offering a repair service. Along with all that, they sold the most gas out of all the pumping stations in Kona. This general store proved to be the heart of the community because the large lanai located out front was a very popular place to come and "talk story".
This store became very popular quickly because it's such a convenient stop to get things from groceries, sporting goods, photography supplies, bicycles, to jewelry, sewing supplies and more. Even though business was flourishing, it slowly started to die off as well because with the construction of the Mamalahoa highway, traffic was diverted to the fishing area of Kona which caused a loss on the store.
The family could no longer support the business so it was put up for sale. It was then purchased by a couple who were residence in Kona for over 30 years. They revived the old shop and today it is almost like a museum. Containing things such as old Japanese records to the milling machines the original owner invented. Most of these historical items are for display only but the store still does include popular items such as groceries and repairing items.
The Keauhou store is a historical treasure in the coffee town of Kona because it reminds us of the family orientated businesses that used to be around.

Teshimas Restaurant

Teshimas has been a local favorite since 1929, when it started out as a general merchandise store, selling beer and wine, in Honalo, Kona. This family run shop became a restaurant in 1940 and quickly gained popularity. Some of the great and delicious foods you can find here are mainly of Japanese influence but also includes local favorites such as beef tomato, curry stew and spare ribs.
Some of the many attributes of this restaurant that make it so special are the casual and family orientated atmosphere and the vintage Japanese decor. Large gatherings can be held upstairs for family get togethers such as wedding receptions, birthday parties and other similar events.
Another unique quality of this restaurant is that the founder, Mrs. Teshima, who is now 103,  would always remember her costumers and their families, new or old. She also would go around the dining area and converse with returning costumers.
If you want an authentic Kona dining experience, Teshimas is a must for your trip.

Makalawena

Makalawena, literally meaning "mischievous winds" is a beautiful secluded beach that is often over looked because of its sheltered location. This beach got it's name because Hawaiian canoe sailors and local navigators know this place to be home to very unpredictable winds. Even so, this beach is an awesome way to spend your day if you are to visit Kailua Kona.
This beach is located near the middle of Kekaha Kai State Park and it lies between the 89 and 90 mile markers off Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway. To get to this beach, be prepared to hike because there is a 20-30 minute trail that starts at Mahaiula Beach and stretches all the way to Makalawena. This hike is well worth it through because this unbelievable beach is and experience you can't miss.
Because this beach is not as "main-stream" as others, it is never very crowded. This beach is blanketed with white sand that is very fine. There are also many Sand dunes that decorate the landscape and provide some shade from the beating Hawaiian sun. Also, if you want to rinse off the thin sand or salt water, there is a brackish water pond a little farther inland.
This unforgettable beach is a great way to spend your day here on the Big Island but if you would like to prolong your stay, camping is available. So come and experience the private, clear waters of Makalawena Beach Park.

Introduction

Kailua- Kona, or more commonly known as Kona is located at the bottom of the Hualalai Volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. Kona's history is much bigger than its size would indicate. This area was a prime location to live in ancient times due to it's beautiful weather and water. Some historic events that occurred in this charming town were the landing of Captain James Cook, the death place of King Kamehameha the Great and the demolishment of the Kapu system.
This town may seem small, but there are many things to do. Many believe that Kona is the heart of tourism on the Big Island and this is so because the town mixes historical sites with modern attractions. One main stream area that is very popular in Kailua Kona is Ali'i Drive. Ali'i Drive runs along the ocean right through the town. It starts at Kailua Pier and goes to the Kuamo'o Battle field which is where a great battle was fought because of a disagreement regarding the importance of the Kapu System.
Although Kailua Kona is known for all of these fun and light hearted things, we must not forget the rich history that lays behind the name. But above all that, it is and forever will be my home.
